The Finger Lakes are ideal for drilling a hole in one of the frozen lakes and participating in a beloved winter activity. During the winter, the most regularly captured fish are rainbow trout, bigmouth bass, and perch. Remember to bring your fishing licence from New York State. If you decide on a last-minute vacation and don’t want to wait for it in the mail, you can print it out online (I’ve done it previously).
About 500 acres of Ganondagan State Historical Park are ideal for snowshoeing. Be cautious as you walk through the snow.
Letchworth State Park
Letchworth State Park, also known as the “Grand Canyon of the East,” provides a variety of outdoor activities to keep you toasty during winter. The park, which is roughly an hour south of Rochester, features more than 60 miles of cross-country skiing and snowmobiling tracks. Snowshoeing is another option. Snow tubing is also a popular activity at the park. Letchworth State Park’s trails, which are considered one of the greatest in the country, are ideal for exploring nature all year.
Stay at the Glen Iris Inn or one of the area’s hotels, both of which are only a few miles from the park’s main gate.
Lake Placid
Of course, the site of the 1980 Olympic gold-medal winning hockey team from the United States must be seen. Is there any spot in the Adirondacks that says winter in New York better than Lake Placid?
You may learn about the history of winter sports at the Lake Placid Olympic Museum. Taking a luge or bobsled trip down the same runs as Olympians might be even more exciting. Grab a pair of skis and head out for some cross-country skiing or try snowshoeing area trails if Olympic sports are too fast or hard. The activities are ideal in the Lake Placid area. Sledding is enjoyable at any time of year, but it is especially enjoyable at Lake Placid. Skiers and snowboarders can enjoy a variety of terrain.
Niagara Falls

In the winter, Niagara Falls State Park is breathtakingly spectacular. Take in the light show, the vista from the Observation Tower, and the Goat Island and Three Sisters Island treks. You can sample several Niagara County regional wines, including New York State Ice Wines, after a half-day spent wandering through the park. Yum!

Syracuse
When you’re the snowiest city in the US, with more than 100 inches of snowfall each year, you have two options: hide for three months or embrace everything snow. Syracuse seizes the bull by the horns and runs with it. Winterfest is held at the home of Syracuse University basketball. The city welcomes inhabitants and guests for ten days and nights, February 13-23, to celebrate the area’s gastronomy, beverages, and attractions including ice sculptures, skating, and a treasure hunt! Local attractions such as the Erie Canal Museum and the Onondaga Historical Association Museum are open for visitation, where you may learn about the area’s history and see special exhibits.
